Kenya Kiriani AB Top

Kiriani is in Murang’s County in Kenya and the coffee factory is formed by small scale farmers who grows SL28 and SL34.

SL28 and SL34 are varieties developed by Scott Laboratories (SL) which was tasked by the Kenyan government in the 1930s to develop strong and drought-resistant varieties. Unfortunately, the SL-28, they failed in their mission to create a high-yield tree, but succeeded in creating delicious beans, with an intensely citric, sweet, balanced and complex flavor. The SL34 plant, however, shines at medium-to-high altitudes and its flavor is characterized by its complex citric acidity, heavy mouthfeel and clean, sweet finish. Kenyan coffee varieties are labeled by the bean size, shape, and quality namely AA, AB, PB, C, E, TT… The list is exhaustive. AA, AB, and C refer to different bean sizes. PB means it’s a peaberry (the coffee cherry had one round seed, not two) and E stands for Elephant. TT are low-density beans. Classifying beans in this way helps to ensure consistency, so that the entire bag of coffee will produce the same particular flavour profile.

The plantation of these varieties is situated in foothills of Abandare hills which enjoys the altitude of 1,650 meter above sea level. The main harvest is between October and December.  Coffee is prepared through wet milling and has a characteristic of super clean fruity cup with notes of berries and floral touch.
